Easy Card Tricks

For most people who have no more than a passing interest in performing magic tricks or perhaps those who are just beginning to learn the secrets of magic tricks and want to entertain with magic, the most obvious type of trick to master first is a card trick. They were certainly the first type of trick that I attempted to perform and indeed I did so with much success at a very young age. Magic tricks with cards have always been popular. Master Magicians of the past used them frequently. Indeed the great Houdini started his career performing magic tricks as was initially known as the King of Cards.

Many card tricks require little or no skill but can still be extremely effective in baffling an audience. Other card tricks require great dexterity and skill to perform as the art of palming may be required. If you are just starting out and want an easy beginner’s trick then try  the first of these two tricks on a few friends.

Finding the Chosen Card is a trick you can do straightaway. A pack of cards is divided into two portions. A spectator selects a card from one half, and places it in the other, which is shuffled. You, the magician, look through the half of the pack and immediately discover the chosen card!

The secret is simple. In one half of the pack are arranged all the odds cards i.e., ace, three, five, seven, nine, Jack and King. The other half contains the even cards. No one should notice this. When a card is placed from one section to the other, you will be able to immediately discover it when looking through that portion of the park. Obviously an amount of preparation is involved and of course you can only perform the trick once. That’s fine however as you should only perform any trick once to your audience, in most instances.

Another very simple trick is one of the first I ever attempted and believe it or not it worked first time! You spread a dozen cards in a fan and invite a person to focus upon one particular card. The cards have been chosen at random, and their backs are towards the magician. As soon as the spectator has made his choice, you look deep into his eyes, and immediately name the chosen card.

As soon as the person gazes upon a particular card you calmly bend up the lower corner of the card. This is easy to do as the cards are held with both hands and the thumbs are in the back. The left thumb does the bending, and you carefully observe the index corner of the chosen card, which is hidden at the back of the fan. Then you look in the spectator's eyes and name the card!

The second trick does require a little practice but be patient it does work provided you put a little effort into mastering it. Please don’t expect success with this trick without a little effort at rehearsing on your part. To make it slightly easier to manage until you get the hang of handling the cards you could try using eight or ten cards.

You should never perform a trick that requires some level of skill when you are under prepared. The audience will see immediately your lack of technique and the secret of the trick may be common knowledge in an instant. A good magician never reveals their secrets, by accident or design.
